I’ve been pining for some time now for a reflective outlet, something beyond what social media can offer. Something with far more creative potential for expression, but also aesthetic sophistication.
The name itself came from exploring the idea of seizing the day, of doing the thing, of going after it, of treating today like it could be your last. I explain it in those phrases because I have a hard time honing in on exactly what I’m going for in a concise, self-contained description.
It came after a drawn-out period of teetering over that outlet: what to do, how to do it, when to do it.
Fac Si Facis captures that idea for me: “Do it, if you’re going to do it.” When I came across it, it really spoke to me. If you want to do something, and you reasonably expect to do it someday, do it now.
Get past whatever is keeping you from doing it. Set aside inaction and endless deliberation. Deliberate not on whether to say it, but on what to say and how to say it clearly.
The venue – a WordPress blog – was the ideal match for the name. It is a more freestanding outlet, with the freedom to make even the smallest adjustments so that the visual presentation complements the written word. Not sophistication in the highbrow sense, but the ability to make the space feel like my own.
I am, for the time being, not going to place any limitations on what this is or can become. It’s a space to get the ideas out, to ponder things. To be right about some things, and probably wrong about many more. But to think and air things openly and honestly.
To give myself, and others, something to consider – and perhaps get a little closer to the truth, wherever it may exist.
